Saying Goodbye

Mourning and memorials were just as important as remembering your best friend's birthday, even before the 19th century. Back then, people crafted tombstones fancier than their own homes! But when the Civil War cranked grief up to eleven, folks decided that crying into handkerchiefs wasn’t cutting it. Enter spiritualism—because chatting with the dearly departed was way more fun than just moping around. So, if you've ever wondered how 19th-century people managed their grief, picture this: séances where you could literally chat with those who’d passed on, and memorials so grand you’d think they were competing for top honors. Join us as we explore how people in the 19th century found creative ways to honor and remember their loved ones. Fee includes a simple meal. Program recommended for age 15 years and older. Admission fee is $15 per person.
